With the Veterinary Team
Veterinary professionals, however, may be more reluctant to embrace this new treatment modality. There may be stigma surrounding the use of cannabis, fears for patient safety as well as fear of legal consequences, concerns about losing a patient to the “competition”, and hesitancy to use any treatment modality where the benefits have not been proven by research in a clinical study.
For all these reasons and more, emotions run high, and communications between veterinary professionals advocating for the utilization of cannabis and members of the pet's primary care team can be fraught with conflict. It is essential that veterinary professionals, on all sides of the issue of cannabis, approach interactions with their colleagues with the intent to communicate clearly, professionally, and with empathy.
